Orienteering - What Is It?
It is a recreation where you use a map (and later a compass) to
find your way from a start point, to several checkpoints
('controls'), and then to the finish. Usually the courses are set
through open woodland. You choose your own route. As experience
improves your skills, you advance to more challenging courses.
Who can orienteer?
Anyone. Orienteering is simple to learn; you can catch on to the
basic skills in about 30 minutes. People of all ages and fitness
levels can enjoy it. Young children, families, or mature adults
can orienteer as 'wayfarers', whilst the athletic 'youngsters' can
compete in defined age categories.
How can I start?
There are many orienteering meets throughout New Brunswick during
the spring, summer, and fall. Beginners are welcome. Free
instruction will be given, and a beginners's course requires no
previous experience. Look through the list of events in this
brochure, and telephone the contact person for the meet that
interests you. It's as easy as that. You can join Orienteering
New Brunswick by completing the form in this brochure.
