The past year was largely uneventful. The hosting service company seems to have been absorbed by an outfit based in Texas. However, our server is still located in the Toronto area. I recommend that we continue with Hostingplex (MDS Hosting) as our hosting service provider for the next year provided the price remains attractive.
The new event calendar went into production shortly after January 1 as planned. An instruction page for submitting events was written and added to the meet official's handbook part of the website.
Initially I enrolled all members of the Board of Directors plus all Level 1 and higher officials known to me as registered users of the system with update privileges. The list includes:
Also as part of this change, I added an email forwarding function so that email sent to addresses of the form initials@orienteering.nb.ca will be forwarded to the person's real email address. This allows us to use these addresses in contact information with some control over spam. If spam becomes a problem the address can be deleted and a new one assigned. The initials were those known to me, mostly two letters except for my own.
I would like feedback, both from the officials and from regular members, as to how well the system has worked. Should it be continued, or should we revert to the old style calendar?
Recently the BOD authorized me to start revising the Club "web sites" to account for the changes in ONB's organizational structure. I have begun this by removing write access from the club webmasters and putting a "staleness" notice on the home pages. Tidying it all up will take more time.
In this respect it really would be helpful if I knew the offical status of each club.
I would also like authorization to clean up the 2008 COC pages in a manner similar to that done for the 2000 COCs. I.e. save the existing pages in a non-public place and replace them with a set of results pages for public consumption.
I am still prepared to continue as webmaster for another year. Of course, if somebody else is dying to take it over...
