Falcon Orienteering Club 1996 Annual Report

24 November 1996 The Falcon Orienteering Club has concluded another successful orienteering year.

MEMBERSHIP: We have four families and eight adults officially registered as active members. What we lack in quantity is definitely made up for in quality. We have five high performance athletes, including two national team members. Club development and promotion of orienteering continue to be an issue. We will attempt to do more organized meet advertising, public relations and promotion.

FINANCIAL REPORT: The club has a balance of $3217.53 in its coffers.

MAPPING: With the help of ONB, the club obtained a Jetstream position for the summer which was shared by Cherie Mahoney, Doug Mahoney and Sandy Smith. They updated the Ing's Interval map which was used for the Autumn Amble. The club plans to request two positions for the summer of 1997 for further mapping. We are also requesting current aerial photography to aid in the updating. Current schedule calls for flights in 2002. The Trim Course is ongoing. The Park has finally hung the controls, which now need checking before the maps are produced.

COMPETITIONS:
Hosting: The Club hosted three meets in the past year: the Flood-O at Centennial Park, the Falcon Cup at Fundy National Park, and the Autumn Amble at Ing's Interval. We were pleased with the participation in all three meets. We also ran a meet for the Alma Consolidated School, and for Moncton District Scouts at Fundy National Park.

Participation: Club members participated in a variety of local, national and international meets. Although we lost the Falcon Cup by a very slim margin for the first time, we retained the Sass Peepre Cup. Our club did well at the Canadian Championships in Ottawa. In the classic race, we had two first place, one second, and two third place finishes. In the short distance, we had three first place and two third place finishes. Our relay team won the championship as well. All five of our high performance athletes competed in World Cup and other orienteering events in Europe. Modesty aside, we believe that Falcons still rule.

NEW EXECUTIVE: At our annual meeting, president Kirk Meldrum resigned. The new slate of officers includes Luella Smith as president, Ray Arsenault as vice president, Ed Smith as secretary, Anne Mahoney as treasurer and Kirk Meldrum as past president. We are all looking forward to another successful orienteering season.
