Bits and Pieces

Are You Moose Enough???

The time is really ripe for registering for what should be a fun event. I have teamed up with Alex Whaley in the "mixed" (not up, hopefully) category for the 24 hour event scheduled for May 17-18 in the Cobequid Mountains of Nova Scotia. Poor boy, he does not know what he is in for; 24 hours with me. We wish him good luck, and hope that there will be a large number of competitors.

A six hour event is also available for those less foolish than I. An entry form was enclosed in the last copy of ONB Notes. If you do not have a partner, why not contact me, and I will serve as a clearing house.

1997 Swedish O-Ringen and the World Championships

There is great interest by New Brunswick orienteers in this event, which features five days of competition. To the best of my knowledge the following have registered from New Brunswick: Mike Fellows; Wil, Mike and Sandy Smith; and Doug Mahoney. In addition, the 55 year old Swedish-Canadian is going to give it a try before he gets too old. Wil and Sandy are using it as a warm-up for the World Championships in Norway which they have qualified for. I think New Brunswick has a good chance to get one or two additional athletes selected at the Ottawa Inter-Club event, which also doubles as a World Championship Canadian Team selection meet. Whoever goes, we wish them the best of luck.

New Officials

Robert Hughes, Nancy Hamilton and Paul Looker have taken the first part of the Officials Level I course, and passed their written examinations with flying honours. Congratulations.

Training Camp

A training camp open for all age categories, junior and adult, will take place June 6 to 8 at Wentworth,Nova Scotia. This is a great opportunity to learn from the best orienteers we have in the east, all organized by Luella Smith, 1-506-887-2030. You will also have an opportunity to compete in the Falcon Cup, moved from New Brunswick for this very special weekend. Hope to see you there.

Canadian Orienteering Championships

Now is the time to plan for the July 27 to August 3 Canadian Orienteering Championships in the challenging terrain of Manitoba. Believe me, if you have not experienced it, you do not know what you are missing. Honest!

FUNDY Cable

Our local community TV is intending to make a half hour long TV special on orienteering in Fredericton, starting with a beginners clinic this spring, followed up by a street-O and finishing with a Odell Park Score-O. We hope that this will lead to more people trying our sport in the fall.

Foxes Greeter/Helper

Michael Fellows has volunteered to help out at our orienteering meets by taking care of and teaching newcomers, and by giving advise and route choice critique to those who need it after the event. He is a very competent orienteer who we all can learn from. Do not hesitate to approach him, if you have any questions. In addition, he will be running training sessions for intermediate/advanced level orienteers starting April 24 at the Tree House (to be confirmed). See you there.

Words of Wisdom

The following pieces of good advise were forwarded to me by Nancy Hamilton: "Results! Why, man, I have gotten a lot of results. I know several thousand things that won't work." -- Thomas Edison "Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." --Will Rogers "If I never try anything, I never learn anything. If I never take a risk, I stay where I am." -- H. Prather I have to add two of my own by my favourite philosopher, Henry Thoreau: "When a dog runs at you, whistle for him". "We look to windward for fair weather."

Orienteering Suits

It is becoming time again to purchase a new orienteering suit for me. The price falls substantially for at least 25 suits. If you are interested in a suit, please send me, by May 15, your height and approximate weight (it will remain confidential), and wether you want the pants to be loose fitting or skin tight. I will then get a quotation and get back to you for a final decision.
