President's Podium

Stig Skarborn in Fredericton

Half the orienteering season has passed. Looking back on the spring season, good things and not so good things happened. On the positive side beginners training camps in Moncton and Fredericton appeared to be successful in that they attracted new people. Once again through the efforts of the Smith and Mahoney families a very positive junior and senior training camp was held in Hilisborough. It is great to see that some of our best former junior orienteers are now the coaches at these camps.

The seasons best attended event turned out to be the Falcon Cup with a good crowd showing up. Another highlight is the fact that three of our elite orienteers managed to attend World Cup events in the UK. New Brunswick has never been so well represented at the World stage before, and the sport and personal exper= ience our athletes are obtaining boggles my mind. When I first became involved in orienteering in New Brunswick as a vice-president in 1979 such participation seemed impossible.

Also positive is the high quality of the events put on this season, with the Rockwood Park Score-O, Falcon Cup, Blue Bell Revisited, and the Sass Peepre events being special, each in their own way, even though a control was stolen from Course 3 at Mactaquac Park  in Fredericton, and that it rained cats and dogs for part of the event. There were certainly many people with rain-straightened hair at the end of the day. What is unfortunate is the very small number of people that are showing up for these events. I feel that the product is there, but somehow we are just not getting the message out.

WE NEED YOU (YES YOU) HELP TO MAKE THE FALL EVENTS, STARTING WITH THE TWO DAY FREDERICTON INN EASTERN CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS/PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS A SUCCESS. COME OUT YOURSELF IF YOU ARE A MEMBER, AND ENCOURAGE FRIENDS TO GIVE ORIENTEERING A TRY IF THEY HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.

We have also promoted the Eastem Canadian Championships extensively in the US, and hope a few friends from south of the border will show up. See the event flyer in this newsletter for information on registration, accommodation and meal deals.

There is often a misconception that championship events are only for the elite. Nothing could be further from the truth. At all of these events, including the Canadian Orienteering Championships, courses are available for every skill level. They are not more difficult than at other events.

Have a good summer.

Results - Flood-O

Kirk Meldrum in Sussex

And so flow in the official results from the Flood-O at Centennial Park on May 10, 1998.  For the first time in recent memory we had great weather - no snow, rain, sleet, wind or ice.  Even the floodwaters had receded.  Perhaps it had to do with the fact that Kirk Meldrum, controller, could not be there due to previous commitments. He organized all the meet officials the week before - all rookies who had just taken the Level I officials clinic and who all did a superb job during the event.   We had about 45 participants - families, scouts, cadets, and interested people who had attended beginners' clinics during the past month.

On TV Watching

Sport NB

Studies have indicated that Canadians watch a lot of television, even though they are becoming more and more familiarized with the need to be physically active.  The average Canadian watched 3.2 hours of TV daily in 1976.   In 1987, it was estimated that the average Canadian watched 3.4 hours of TV a day.   Males between the ages of 18 and 24 watched the least, while older women over the age of 60 watched the most TV.  In 1981, 56% of Canadians claimed to exercise 3 hours a week.  In 1986, 75% of Canadians were exercising 3 times per week.

Bits and Pieces

Stig Skarborn in Fredericton

Provincial Team Named (Not updated to reflect spring events). The following have been named to the provincial team and the B and C pools:

Provincial Team

Victoria Smith
Heather Smith
Vicky Whaley
Sandy Smith
Alex Whaley
Graham St-Laurent
Wil Smith
Doug Mahoney
Jeff Mahoney
Mike Smith

B Pool

Rachel St-Laurent
Cherie Mahoney
Daven Hughes
Graham Smith
Jon Smith

C Pool

Lucy Hughes

The provincial team is named primarily based on the performance at the ranking meets given in bold in the event schedule.  For you to be considered for the team, you must participate in at least 60 percent of the events.  The list is updated after the spring/early summer season.

Provincial Team members (not B and C Pool members) were entitled to a contribution of $100 from ONB to attend the Ottawa Inter-Club May 16 and 17.  In addition, members of the provincial team and the B and C pools are eligible for a $50 contribution to attend the Atlantic Junior and Adult Training Camp, June 5 to 7, in Shenstone, Albert County, New Brunswick.

Funding assistance to attend the COC's in British Columbia and an out-of-province fall event, have been set at $50 per Provincial Team Member.

Blue Lake Clinic - Alberta

For very many years the Alberta Orienteering Association have held a major training camp at a wonderful, I am told, place called Blue Lake.  It is open to all intermediate and advanced level orienteers.  This year it was held June 25-29, and featured master coach Hakan Eriksson, an elite Swedish orienteer who placed 2nd at the 1997 0-ringen in the H21 Elite category, 13 seconds after the winning, and very famous, Jorgen Martensson.   Keep in mind that the 13 seconds was after five days of races.  By the way, the third place finisher was 17 seconds after Hakan.  Anyway, the Alberta $435 per person all inclusive fee, or $342 per person if tenting, looks pricy in comparison with the ONB Training camp cost of $90 per person for a weekend.

Fredericton Foxes Beginners Clinic

Jack-pot.  For the first session on April 15 we had 38 people show up, including a sizeable contingent from the 1st Hanwell scout troup.  I've never seen anything like it before in New Brunswick.  Hope we did not scare them away.   Thank you all capable assistants.  In retrospect we appear to have done so (scared them away).  They did not show up at any of the spring events. Strange.   Can anyone help us, and say what we are doing wrong?

Mental Preparation

Len Doucet, a consultant and professor in the Physical Education and Recreation Department at the University of Moncton, has an extensive background as an athlete and high level coach.  In the last five years he has worked with the mental preparation of athletes from 10 to 70 years old.  If you need assistance on this valuable aspect of sport, he can be contacted at 858-3759.

25th Ottawa Inter-Club

This event was held on May 16 and 17 north of Ottawa.  The main results, with emphasis on New Brunswick participants, follow.  The top accolades go to Sandy Smith who won F20-34 with the fastest runs both days: 101:29 on day 1, 102:42 on day 2 for a combined time of 204:11.  Second place went to Marie Catherine Bruno from Quebec in 215:44.  Cherie Mahoney also participated but had a rough time on the second day.  Good going Sandy, better luck next time Cherie.

In M20-34 Mike Waddington from Ontario finished first with times of 87:56 and 75:06 for a total time of 163:02.  Second place went to Mike Smith of the Moncton area Falcon Orienteering Club in a time of 167:55.  Other New Brunswick finishers were Wil Smith in 4th in a time of 176:10, Jonathan Smith in 10th with 245:28, and Jeff Mahoney in 11th with 247:05.  This was a good test with many of Canada's elite participating, including Brian May (fastest on Day 2, but tough going on day 1), Brian Graham and Francis Falardeau.

In other categories Vickey Whaley won F 15-16 and Alex Whaley won Ml7-19, both from the Fredericton Foxes Orienteering Club.

Official IOF World Ranking

After six World Cup events this spring, the first three women are all from Finland, followed by four Swiss, two Czechs and one Norwegian woman.  No Swede among the top 10.  Halifax's Pam James competed in four of the events which was good enough to put her in 75th spot.  Based on only one event, Albert's Sandy Smith is ranked 286th, and two other Canadians, Philippa McNeil and Pippa McNeil, are in 299th and 377th spots.

On the men's side, two Swiss top the standings after the six races, with the other top competitors coming from Finland, the Czech Republic and one Swede in 4th place.  Four Canadian men competed and Mike Smith is ranked 90th with four races while brother Wil Smith is 130th after three races.  Both are from Albert.   Martin Pardoe competed in three races as well and is ranked 260th and Dave Donaldson, with only two races, is ranked 261st.

Recognizing how tough the competition is, I think the Eastem Canadians have done remarkably well. Congratulations to all.

Orienteering Equipment and Clothing

Finding orienteering equipment continues to be difficult, at least in Eastern Canada.  I found several orienteering clothing sites after hitting "Jalas" and then search, in order to find out if these excellent orienteering shoe manufacturers also made a running shoe.  The best part was that several clothing outlets had some very good sale prices on suits, shoes and compasses.  In addition, many sites showed colour pictures of what they had for sale.  Give it a try.

The Cost of Orienteering

Orienteering is still a bargain in New Brunswick, at least in comparison witli Alberta.  The Alberta Orienteering Association membership fees are $30 for the first person, $15 for each additional person, a discount of 1/3 for members over 65 and full time students, with a maximum of $55 per household.  Groups such as scouts, guide and schools cost $45.  On the other hand, at least B events seem inexpensive.  Member adults $5, juniors $2, map-hiker groups $5 for the first map and $2 for each extra map.  For non-members the cost is $7 for first map and $4 for additional maps.

An 0 Solution

Staff writer

The question in the spring edition of ONB Notes was a variant on an old theme.  It involved having to transport orienteering maps, a damsel orienteer and a gigolo across a river in a small rowboat too small to hold all at once.  Other dressings may include missionaries, pygmies, chickens, foxes, money or desserts.

For this version, someone actually submitted the correct answer plus suggested an alternative anonymously (thanks Ray).  To wit we offer the following solutions.

The following trips could be made:

1. You row across the river with the princess and leave her on the other side.
2. Return empty.
3. Take the unscrupulous gigolo (moron) across the river.
4. Retum with the princess.
5. Take the maps across the river.
6. Retum emply.
7. Take the princess across the river (last trip).

Altematively, you could compress the above correct solution into one trip by exploiting the fact that the map container floats and the ink is waterproof anyway.  In this case, put the princess in the boat with you.  Make the moron hang onto the back of the boat with one hand while holding the maps behind him with his other hand.  Thanks again, Ray.

An 0 Teaser

Staff writer

This question reportedly (thanks Nancy) was used on a math test for 12- and 13-year olds in China (yeah, right, and life in America really is like their sitcoms).   The suggested time limit is 20 minutes.

There are ping-pong balls in a basket.  If the number of balls is even, you divide into half and then take away half.  If the number of balls is odd, you add one ball and then remove half.  This process is a cycle. If the is only one ball remaining, there won't be any removal and the cycle ends.

Now if the initial number of ping pong balls in the basket is odd, about over 700, after 10 cycles, added 8 balls, and at the end remains 1 ball, what is the number of balls initially?
