This page is a compendium of information on the site policies and organization for the use of the site adminsitrators. It will be revised from time-to-time to reflect changing practices and problems.
The general policy guiding this site is that pages should be simple, with a minimum of effort expended on forcing layout. Images are used very sparingly. Fancy html features are avoided. Especially style sheets. The mark-up is mostly used to specify content tyoe and relationships, formatting is mostly left to the browser. For example, specific fonts are not normally specified.
It is the webmaster's experience that word processers do not produce pages that will be consistent with the rest of the site. A program specifically designed to do web page authoring is much better. If members wish to produce pages for inclusion in the main ONB site they should use one.
nvu is a suitable authoring tool. It provides a full gamut of features, is reasonably easy to learn and use, and by default produces clean simple html. It is also free software and available for most computing platforms including Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. You can download it from the URL given above.
The site is also used as a repository for various ONB documents. Documents in proprietary formats will not be stored on the site. The preferred format is Portable Document Format (PDF). This should be used for documents that are primarily produced for other purposes and that are secondarily made available on the site.
Members with web pages or other documents to be placed on the site should send them to the webmaster as attachments to an email explaining what is wanted.
Requests for changes to web pages should also be sent to the webmaster. Please remember that he is not a mind reader. If you don't tell him about changes they won't get made. This particularly applies to the schedule.
Pages may be written in english or french. If both are wanted the submitter will have to supply them both. At present, where significant amounts of information are provided in both languages, it is preferred to have two separate web pages - one in each language - rather than one page with parallel copy.
Clubs are responsible for maintaining their own sites. Club administrators should maintain their own backup copies of all pages on their site.
Uploading pages to the server is done using ftp. Club webmasters should contact the ONB webmaster if they need to (re)acquire the password, or need other assistance in this regard.
Club webmasters are free to use whatever tools they wish to produce and maintain their pages. Nvu, see above, is a reasonable page composer/editor if you don't already have another one.
It is recommended that clubs keep their pages simple.
It is required that the club site home page (at least) should contain
a navigation link to the ONB home page http://www.orienteering.nb.ca/index.html
The "What's New" feature on the site assumes that each page on the site, including club sites, has a unique title. It would be much appreciated if club webmasters will ensure that this is true. Please use the convention that titles of club pages should start
Falcons: Foxes: Fundy:
as appropriate followed by a suitably descriptive title for the page. This will help ensure uniqueness and make the What's New feature better for readers. Your page composer/editor should have an easy way to input a page title. If you need to handcraft one, use your browser's View Page Source feature to look at the source for this page to see how it is done.
Clubs should limit themselves to using less than 20 megabytes of disk space.
Thanks for your cooperation, your webmaster, David Fellows.
